PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the use of a pump light source of high power possible by enhancing the flexibility in wavelength selection of pump light. SOLUTION: The wavelength conversion apparatus is equipped with a difference frequency generation section 20 and a sum frequency generation section 40. The difference frequency generation section generates the difference frequency light of a frequencyω<SB>m</SB>satisfyingω<SB>m</SB>=ω<SB>p1</SB>-ω<SB>s</SB>from the signal light of a frequencyω<SB>s</SB>and the first pump light of a frequencyω<SB>p1</SB>, and outputs the difference frequency light as intermediate light. The sum frequency generation section generates the sum frequency light of the frequencyω<SB>c</SB>satisfyingω<SB>c</SB>=ω<SB>p2</SB>+ω<SB>m</SB>from the intermediate light and the second pump light of the frequencyω<SB>p2</SB>, and outputs the sum frequency light as the conversion light of the signal light.
