A process for filling insulating glass panes with a filler gas, each of the glass panes comprising first and second glass sheets with a spacer frame between them, comprises arranging an insulating glass pane upright on a lower edge of it with a the spacer frame contacting a first of the glass sheets entirely about a periphery of the first sheet and a second of the glass sheets contacting the spacer frame only along an upper edge of the second sheet with a lower edge of the second sheet spaced a distance from the spacer frame, sealing the lower edge of the pane and opposite vertical edges of the pane, introducing filler gas into an interior of the pane through a space between the spacer frame and the second sheet at one vertical edge of the pane and withdrawing gas from the interior of the pane between the spacer frame and the second sheet at the other vertical edge of the pane, and thereafter pressing the second sheet into contact with the spacer frame entirely about the periphery of the second sheet
