[Class 40 (viii)] A tunable coaxial resonator, matched to a transmission.line, for use as a power-dissipating load, is designed to avoid over-heating and voltage breakdown. The inner conductor 2 has thin walls made of iron, nickel or an alloy of nickel with chromium or iron so that it dissipates power. Tuning is effected by means of a screw-adjustable plunger 4, and matching by choice of the point of attachment to the inner conductor 2, of the inner conductor 8 of coaxial line 7. Fins 12 are provided for cooling, and a fan or blower may be added, or the inner conductor 2 may be water-cooled, and voltage breakdown may be prevented by the use of oil as a dielectric. Alternatively the resonator may be coupled to the line inductively or capacitively, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown). The inner conductor 2 may itself be threaded, and the outer conductor 1 may be filled with oil and placed in an exterior water bath, Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively the inner conductor may comprise a U-tube through which cooling water flows, tuning being effected by means of a variable condenser connected between the tube and the end wall 25 of the resonator, Fig. 5 (not shown).</p> |
