The present invention describes a medium for the extraction of carbon dioxide, which is used in a process for capturing carbon dioxide contained in a gaseous effluent, comprising, in an aqueous medium, the combination of a particular base chosen from hydroxides with a compound chosen from thiols. The process of capturing carbon dioxide consists in carrying out the following steps: a) bringing the gas to be treated that contains CO2 into contact with said extraction medium, so as to obtain a CO2-depleted gas and a CO2-rich extraction medium, b) the regeneration of the CO2-rich extraction medium, in order to obtain an extraction medium that can be used again and to generate a gas that is very rich in CO2.
