PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer having improved stability with lapse of time and improved convenience in handling by a method for producing a vinyl polymer by which a vinyl polymer obtained by living radical polymerization of vinyl monomers using an organic tellurium compound as a polymerization initiator has a tellurium content of not more than 100 ppm and a less residual amount of the organic tellurium compound remaining in the polymer. SOLUTION: A polymer (product resin) having a further decreased content of tellurium is obtained through a polymerization step of synthesizing a vinyl polymer by living radical polymerization using an organic tellurium compound as a polymerization initiator, an oxidation decomposition step of reacting an oxidizing agent on the polymer, an optional recovering step and a purifying step.
