An ice cream making machine discharge chute is protected by a hatch. The assembly manufactures food pastes especially ice cream and has a drum (12) for the food with a discharge slide (25) plus an outlet (18) and hatch closure. The apparatus comprises: (a) the slide (25) incorporates a cleaning hatch (32); (b) the hatch (32) moves between the closed position, and a raised position with internal drum access; (c) the slide (25) has a U-shaped cross-section whose outer walls (30) converge; and (d) the hatch (32) hinges on the drum (12) side walls (30).
