Check deposit apparatus and method of the automatic teller machine are provided, which make deposit module small by reducing the height of the deposit module. A first transport unit(20) is placed from the front to the rear on the top of the deposit module(10). The second transport unit(24) is mounted on the backside of the deposit module in the vertical direction. The upper end of the gate(30) is fixed to the periphery of lower end of the second transport unit. The third transport unit(26) is placed under the gate at an interval from the second transport unit. The fourth transport unit(28) is positioned at the upper end of the third transport unit in the horizontal direction. The storage(40) is positioned in the opposite distal end of the fourth transport unit.
