<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device with an optically series two-stage optical modulation means capable of defocusing an image caused by a foreign matter stuck to the optical modulation means with a simple configuration, and to provide a projector. <P>SOLUTION: Since the image display device 70 is equipped with a color modulation light valve 23 and a luminance modulation light valve 43 connected optically in series, it has a wide luminance dynamic range obtained by multiplying luminance dynamic ranges in the respective light valves. Furthermore, the image forming surface 108 of the color modulation light valve 23 is shifted by predetermined length (d) along an optical axis Ce from a conjugate surface K1, so that an image formed on the image forming surface 108 of the color modulation light valve 23 is relayed to the image forming surface 118 of the luminance modulation light valve 43 in a state where it is blurred to the degree in accordance with the predetermined length (d).
