A process for combined recovery and purification of trimethylolethane from aqueous reactions mixtures obtained by reacting formaldehyde with propionic aldehyde in the presence of a metal hydroxide. The process comprises a number of steps including evaporating the reaction mixture allowing only trimethylolethane to at least partially crystallise as crude trimethylolethane, evaporating remaining water, heating obtained reaction mixture and/or obtained crude trimethylolethane and sublimating include trimethylolethane for recovery as purified trimethylolethane. |
