A rubber composition comprising 100 parts by weight of at least one rubber, 3 to 50 parts by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol containing an oxyalkylene group of the following formula in the form of particles having an average particle diameter of 20 to 1000 mu m or staple fiber having an average length of 10 to 5000 mu m and an aspect ratio (i.e., a ratio of fiber length/diameter) of 10 to 1000: wherein R<1> and R<2> are hydrogen or an alkyl groups, X is hydrogen, an alkyl group, an alkyl ester group, an alkylamide group, or a sulfonate group and n is 1 to 300.
