A slurry comprises a solvent, an alloying agent, a halide activator and an inert species having a particle size of less than or equal to 200 mesh. The alloying agent may comprise carbon, a transition metal, silicon or chromium and is preferably ferrosilicon, ferrochrome or chromium. The halide activator is preferably iron chloride tetrahydrate, iron chloride hexahydrate or magnesium chloride hexahydrate. A further slurry has a molar ratio of a halide of a halide activator to an elemental metal of less than 10:1. Also disclosed are methods for forming a metal layers adjacent to a substrate comprising the step of subjecting a slurry coated substrate to annealing to form a metal layer coupled to the substrate and a diffusion layer in which an amount of an alloying agent changes with depth at a rate of between -0.01 and -5.0% per µm, a metal layer having a thickness of less than 500 µm and a concentration of an alloying agent being at a maximum in said substrate and decreasing by no more than 20 wt. % over a depth of 50 µm or less and a metal layer in which an alloying agent has a concentration of at least 10 wt. % at a depth of less than or equal to 30 µm and of at most 6 wt. % at a depth of greater than 150 µm. |
