PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing cellulose nanofibers, which has reduced environmental burden while suppressing the chemical and mechanical damage of natural cellulose. SOLUTION: The method includes the following step: Lignocellulose is treated in an aqueous medium containing a nitroxy radical derivative, an alkali halide (e.g. alkali bromide), and an oxidizing agent to remove both lignin and hemicellulose, and simultaneously, oxycellulose is obtained, and thus conducting pulping, bleaching treatment and cellulose's oxidation in a single step.
