A hydrogen generator comprising a reforming catalyst layer and a shift catalyst layer, a burner, a combustion fuel supply unit, and a cooling air supply unit is provided to heat directly a reforming catalyst layer as well as a shift catalyst layer, compactly arrange the reforming catalyst layer and the shift catalyst layer, and reduce the time taken to increase a temperature to a shift reaction temperature, and a method for operating the hydrogen generator is provided. A hydrogen generator(100) comprises: a reforming catalyst layer(102) and a shift catalyst layer(103) which are formed in a pipe shape and disposed at inner and outer sides of a concentric circle; a burner(110) disposed between the reforming catalyst layer and the shift catalyst layer, the burner having an inner peripheral surface(111) in which a plurality of first nozzles(112) are formed to spray a flame onto the reforming catalyst layer, an outer peripheral surface(118) in which a plurality of second nozzles(119) are formed to spray a flame onto the shift catalyst layer, and a separation wall(115) interposed between the inner and outer peripheral surfaces; a combustion fuel supply unit for guiding a combustion fuel supplied from the outside toward the first nozzles, the second nozzles, or the first and second nozzles, the combustion fuel supply unit including a combustion fuel supply pipe(105) for supplying a combustion fuel into the burner, a first connecting pipe(107a) and a second connecting pipe(107b) branched off from the combustion fuel supply pipe, and a combustion fuel supply valve(106) installed in the combustion fuel supply pipe; and a cooling air supply unit for guiding cooling air toward the second nozzles, the cooling air supply unit including a cooling air supply pipe(108) for supplying cooling air into a second chamber(117), and a cooling air supply valve(109) installed in the cooling air supply pipe. |
