PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the return performance of returning the variable speed ratio of a continuously variable transmission to the maximum variable speed ratio in stopping without impairing running performance. SOLUTION: In this variable speed control device of the continuously variable transmission, running load of a vehicle is detected, a lower limit rotating speed is set according to the detected running load, a target input rotating speed set according to the running condition of the vehicle is limited by the preset lower limit rotating speed, and the variable speed ratio of the continuously variable transmission is controlled so that the actual input rotating speed agrees with the limited target input rotating speed.
