Drive system for battery powered vehicles

A drive system for battery powered vehicle includes an AC motor 10 and an inverter 11 for supplying power to the motor. The inverter is powered by a DC supply obtained from a DC-DC converter itself supplied with power by the vehicle battery. The converter includes a capacitor C which is charged during periods of flux decay in an inductor L. The converter includes a switch Q1 and boosts the battery voltage so that the inverter and motor can operate at voltages of the order of 300 volts. A further switch (Q2, Fig 2) connected across a diode D1 provides control of regenerative braking. Further circuits are described (Figs 3 and 4). The drive system may be used to drive fork lift trucks.
