PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which prevents erroneous focus detection due to a flying object with high luminance and a cloud that suddenly appear in a case where focus detection in a contrast detection system is performed to a starry sky.SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus comprises: an imaging unit which images a subject image; a setting unit which sets a plurality of focus detection ranges in a screen of the imaging unit; a calculation unit which calculates a contrast evaluation value of an image corresponding to the position of a focus lens for each of the plurality of focus detection ranges while moving the focus lens; a determination unit which obtains the maximum value of the contrast evaluation value on the basis of the shape of a curve expressing the relation between the focus lens position and contrast evaluation value for each of the plurality of focus detection ranges, and determines whether or not the curve has the plurality of maximum values; a focus detection unit which performs focus detection using a contrast evaluation value of the focus detection range in which the curve does not have the plurality of maximum values without using the contrast evaluation value of the focus detection range for focus detection for the focus detection range in which it is detected by the determination unit that the curve has the plurality of maximum values.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9
