PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of having stable and excellent transferring performance for a long period through excellent trackability to a recording medium etc., with large unevenness such as embossed paper, excellent nip shape formation with an image carrier, etc. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with: a toner image forming means having a plurality of image carriers 201; a primary transfer means 207 of primarily transferring a toner image onto a plurality of intermediate transfer belts 203 arranged in contact with the plurality of image carriers; a secondary transfer means 209 of secondarily transferring the primarily transferred toner images onto a recording medium 205 carried by a form conveyor belt 221 arranged in contact with all of the intermediate transfer belts; and an optical discharging means 210 of discharging surfaces of the intermediate transfer belts respectively by irradiating them with light. The image forming apparatus being characterized in that each of the intermediate transfer belts has constitution of two or more layers of at least a base material and a photoconductive layer provided as a surface layer on the base material.
