Disclosed are a system and a method for detecting the relative positions of two parts. According to the invention, one of the parts includes a section which is energized by an alternating voltage and which consists of quadrupoles that are arranged behind each other in the direction of the section and are electrically connected in series. In each quadrupole, an inductor is disposed between the upper input pole and the upper output pole of the quadrupole, while a capacitor, thus especially capacitor C, is disposed between the two output poles of the quadrupole. The frequency of the alternating voltage generated by the alternating voltage source is set in such a way that the curve of a voltage amplitude in the direction of the section is a standing wave, in particular as the fundamental or harmonic. At least two sensors which are connected to an electronic evaluation unit are disposed on the second part.
