The invention relates to a system for detecting the proximity of an object to a vehicle, e.g. car, and controlling a warning indicator, dependent upon the detected response of the driver. The system 20 comprises; a means for detecting (Fig. 1, 24 and 26) an object in proximity to a vehicle; means for indicating (Fig. 3, 48) to the driver the detection of said object; means for monitoring the drivers eyes, and detecting gaze 30; means for detecting 32 the motorists brain activity; means for controlling 46 the indicator (Fig. 3, 48) based on the drivers estimated awareness of the object, which is derived from gaze and brain activity detection. The control means may reduce a characteristic of the indicator if the system indicates that the driver is aware of the object, and it may also increase a characteristic of the indicator if indication is that the driver is unaware of the objects closeness to the vehicle. The indication means may be audible, and the characteristics may be tone, frequency, or volume. The indication means may be visual, with visible characteristics such as brightness, size of indicator, colour, or intensity. The system may store (Fig. 3, 49) information relating to the detected close objects, and the corresponding driver awareness. |
