The method involves rotating a closed band (3) in the form of oval ahead of a sensor surface (1) of a sensor, where the band is permeable for the electromagnetic radiation. The activation of band rotation is periodically synchronized. The activation of the band rotation takes place based on surrounding temperature of the sensor surface. The activation of band rotation also takes place based on a parameter of a measurement signal of the sensor. An independent claim is also included for a device for prevention of a contamination of a sensor e.g. radar sensor or an optical sensor of a rail vehicle.
