PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer electrolyte membrane having high durability even under high temperature and low humidification conditions (e.g., an operating temperature of 120°C and a relative humidity of 40%), and a polymer electrolyte composition which serves as a material for the polymer electrolyte membrane.

SOLUTION: The polymer electrolyte composition comprises a polymer electrolyte, a transition metal ion, and one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of polyazole compounds and sulfide compounds.
