A control apparatus for a vehicle, the vehicle including an engine, an auxiliary configured to operate by a motive power of the engine, and a continuously variable transmission configured to transmit the motive power of the engine to a driving wheel, the control apparatus comprising: an electronic control unit configured to (a) perform shifting control of the continuously variable transmission such that an operating point of the engine follows an optimal fuel economy line, and (b) correct a required output amount that is used for shifting control of the continuously variable transmission and that is based on an operation by a driver, in accordance with a load torque resulting from the auxiliary, such that (i) a smoothing process of changes in the required output amount is executed when the required output amount is increased, and that (ii) the smoothing process is not executed when the required output amount is reduced.
