The invention relates to a device (22) for coordinating the movement of the pistons (14) of a compression and expansion machine used in a system for recovering thermal energy, including: a first input shaft (20) connected to a first pair of pistons (14a-14b); a second input shaft (21) connected to a second pair of pistons (14b-14d), the two shafts (20, 21) having a relative movement relative to one another and being coaxial according to an axis X; an output shaft (10) of the compression and expansion machine; and a gear mechanism between the input shafts (20, 21) and the output shaft (10), comprising: a first set of gears transmitting a first discontinuous rotation movement of the first input shaft (20) to the output shaft (10); a second set of gears transmitting a second discontinuous rotation movement of the second input shaft (21) to the output shaft (10), complementing the first movement, said output shaft (10) having a continuous rotation movement.
