PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which can remove a jam of documents easily (jamming removal) while holding down increasing manufacturing costs, even when an original is jammed in an automatic document feeder. SOLUTION: When a jam occurs in the state that part of an original is exposed on the side of the under surface of an original retaining cover 18, the original retaining cover 18 is opened against an original table 14, and a jam removing handle 34 is rotated from the side of the under surface of the original retaining cover 18. At the same time part of the original is held and pulled out toward the side of the under surface of the original retailing cover 18. Thereby two actions can be taken from the side of the under surface of the original retaining cover 18 simultaneously and the jammed original can be removed easily. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
