PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for high density recording excellent in electromagnetic transducing characteristics and running durability. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium obtained by disposing a lower layer containing a nonmagnetic powder dispersed in a binder and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder in this order on a nonmagnetic substrate, the ferromagnetic powder is a ferromagnetic metal powder having <=0.1μm average major axis size, the average thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.01-0.1μm and the surface lubricant index of the medium is 1.1-2.4.
