Preparation of linear saturated alkanes from primary alcohols containing one carbon atom more than that of the alkane comprises reductive dehydroxymethylation of the primary alcohols in presence of hydrogen, a catalyst, at 100-300[deg]C and 1-250 bar and removing the formed water in the reaction, where the primary alcohol is a 8-24C fatty alcohol.
