The machine (30) has a transport device i.e. transport chain (6), circulating in a vertical plane and comprising a horizontal function strand (6a), and a retainer. One side open rotary holders are rotatably arranged in the chain at a distance to each other. A rotary drive for holders is provided in a rotational section of the strand. A holding device is non-rotatable with the drive and holds a meat strip (3) at a front end of a skewer within the region of the section. A rotary actuator is provided at each holder for simultaneously rotating the strip inserted in a rear end of the skewer. An independent claim is also included for a method for automatically manufacturing a meat skewer.
