PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for automatically, rapidly and surely removing the coats of onions. SOLUTION: This automatic onion coat skinning apparatus is made up of an onion stand 1 for putting an onion (a) thereon so as to stand upside-down, cutting blades 18 for plurally slitting the onion coats longitudinally along the peripheral surface of the onion (a), a rotary drill blade 5 for drilling the root core (c) of the onion (a), and a cutter 23 for excising the bud core (b) of the onion (a); and the other objective method comprises removing the bud core (b) and root core (c) from an onion (a), incising the peripheral coats of the resultant onion to afford the coats with slits, and blowing compressed air against the resulting onion while rolling it on a rotating roller.
