The present invention relates to the linking of two mobile device users. Generally the users will be unknown to each other, for example in a social environment or public place (e.g. bar or restaurant). The invention allows the users to establish a link with each other when both of them indicate a preference for each other. For example, a first user 101 may wish to contact a second user 102 who is unknown to them. The first user 101 sends a directional request signal 111 (e.g. by Infra Red or any other short range wireless method) in the direction of the person they wish to contact. When the second user 102 receives the request 111, they can decide whether to send an acknowledgement signal 112 or to ignore the request. If the first user 101 receives an acknowledgement signal 112 they are then aware that the second user would like to meet.
