PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for fuel cell which uses a colloidal dispersion solution consisting of compound metal particles as a starting material, having a high methanol oxidation activity, superior in anti-toxicity of a by-product. SOLUTION: A buffer is added into a colloidal dispersion solution made of compound metal particles of a plurality of metal elements, and the compound metal particles are carried on a conductive carbon carrier, thereby, a catalyst for fuel cell is prepared. In this case, as the buffer, quaternary ammonium salt or hydroxide tetra-methyl ammonium is preferable. Further, the electrode for direct methanol type fuel cell using the prepared catalyst, the membrane-electrode assembly, and the direct methanol type fuel cell are provided.
