A bioreactor for the culture of algae to produce biofuel products comprises a reaction vessel 1, an internal electrical lighting element 15 (e.g. a fluorescent strip light) housed in a water- tight transparent housing (3, figure 2) and a collection tap for algae (not shown). Preferably the bioreactor is elongate and cylindrical. The lighting element may be mounted in lid 23 such that it is positioned at the central vertical axis of vessel 1 and so that the electrical wiring 21 and connections 22 are external to vessel 1. The bioreactor may further comprise a removable reflective covering (45, figure 9) and a circulation system (figure 7) arranged such that algae and water are drawn in inlet 33 by pump 41 and travel via pipe 25 to outlets 37 to achieve agitation and mixing. |
