PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide phosphorus-containing coated MgO powder having extremely excellent water resistance, to provide a production method therefor, and to provide a resin composition containing the phosphorus-containing coated MgO powder and having excellent water resistance. SOLUTION: The phosphorus-containing coated magnesium oxide is characterized in that, in coated magnesium oxide powder whose surface is provided with a coating layer composed of double oxide, at least a part of the surface is further provided with a coating layer composed of a magnesium phosphate based compound, and also, the content of the magnesium phosphate based compound to the coated magnesium oxide powder is 0.1 to 10 mass% of the whole expressed in terms of phosphorus. Further, the method for producing phosphorus-containing coated magnesium oxide powder is characterized in that coated magnesium oxide powder whose surface is provided with a coating layer of double oxide is treated with a phosphorus compound, and is thereafter fired at≥300°C, thus a magnesium phosphate based compound is formed at least on a part of the surface of the coated magnesium oxide powder.
