PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active damper for a building structure simple in structure, compact, and stably providing an active damping effect even when the oscillation frequency to be damped in the building structure is changed and an active damping method for the building structure. SOLUTION: The natural frequency of a dynamic damper 12 is set to a frequency lower than the oscillation frequency to be damped in the building structure. The reaction force of the excitation force applied from an excitation means 14 to a mass member 18 is applied to the building structure through a support member 28. The frequency of the excitation force is controlled by an excitation control means 52. Therefore, the excitation force of the frequency equal to the oscillation frequency to be damped within the frequency range higher than the natural frequency of the dynamic damper 12 in the building structure is applied to the mass member 18.
