PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element which has high light emission efficiency, long light emission life, improved luminance unevenness, and a suppressed dark spot, and to provide a lighting device and a display device using the organic EL element. SOLUTION: Disclosed is the organic electroluminescent element which has at least an anode, a light emission layer, an electron transporting layer, and a cathode as constitution layers such that the light emission layer contains at least a host compound and a metal complex, the organic electroluminescent element being characterized in that the light emission layer contains a group 8 to 10 metal complex bonded to a specified ligand and the electron transporting layer contains a phenyl or triazine compound having a carbazolyl group.
