The clock, which is preferably an alarm clock, has an illuminated time display with a switch for automatically switching the latter ON and OFF in dependence on the amount of ambient light. The switch employs a photoelement for monitoring the ambient light, connected to an amplifier, which in turn is connected to the time display and to the control circuit for the latter. Preferably, the photoelement is positioned below a lens element in one side of the clock case.
