Title compds(I) were manufd. by reaction of glyoxylic acid with urea and phenol at 40≦̸C in aqueous solvent. Thus, 48.0 g urea, 44.0 g phenol, 55.0 g sulfuric acid, and 274.0ml water reacted with 72.2 g glyoxalic acid for 12 hr at 60≦̸C and adjusted to pH 7 with sodium hydroxide, and stirred at 35≦̸C followed by drying to give 5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)hydantoins, 98% pure.
