Lightly coloured, hard, oxygen contg. wax prods. are prepd. by oxidising the side chains of olefin polymers (I) by treating particulate or molten (I) at 20-200 deg.C with a sulphuric acid chromic acid soln. contg. 60-140 g/l CoO3 and 400-600 g/l H2SO4. The reactants are intensively mixed throughout the oxidation. The prod. is lightly coloured, hard, odourless and can be prepd. in high yields without crosslinking. The wax can be used in (shoe) polishes, coatings for fruit, paper, corrosion protection, textile coatings, adhesives, pigment concentrates, carbon paper coatings, cosmetic compsns., candles, lubricants for metal working separating agents for resins, water repelling agents, printing inks, casting compsns. and lacquer wetting agents. The wax films have high gloss. The waxes can also be further reacted e.g. esterified with alcohols, hydrolysed, or saponified with metal ions or amidated. |
