An inductive heating device for heating a workpiece (21), e.g. made of carbon, has a heating coil (22) disposed so as to surround the workpiece (21). A heat insulating layer (23) is interposed between the workpiece and the heating coil, which layer may consist of a first layer (23a) being made of a carbon powder and a second layer (23b) being made of a carbon and silica powder mixture. A hingh frequency electrical source is used to drive the heating coil (22), which causes an eddy current to be induced in the workpiece (21), thus heating the workpiece (21). The heat insulating layers (23) prevents the surface of .the workpiece from oxidizing and minimizes heat loss from the workpiece (21) during the heating thereof.
