A sorting device is described in which a transport container guided on a transport path is equipped with a plurality of compartments for material for sorting. The transport container is guided on transport cables which themselves run on cable rollers. Each compartment in the transport container has assigned to it an address memory in which the address of a shelf compartment is contained. Each shelf compartment has assigned to it a control device with a flap opening device, and the address of each compartment which runs past with a transport container is interrogated by means of a corresponding interrogation device. When there is coincidence between addresses, an ejection flap arranged under each compartment is opened so that the contents can fall into the desired shelf compartment.
