PURPOSE:To cause an impeller to be prevented from making contact with accumulated paper sheets through rotation of the guide receiving plates of the impeller, by a method wherein, when the feed of the paper sheets is stopped during rotation of the receiving guiding means of the impeller, a push plate is lowered through detection of said stop of the feed. CONSTITUTION:Paper sheets e.g., bank notes, from a conveyance passage 28 are guided and gradually accumulated on a push plate 34 through rotation of an impeller 20. An amount of the paper sheets accumulated is detected by a first sensor 31, and a control circuit 37 lowers the press plate 34 through the running of a driving motor 38 so that a press pressure is adjusted to a given value. In case no bank notes are conveyed even after a specified time lapsed, a third sensor 33 detects said fact, and the control circuit 37 runs the driving motor 38 to lower the press plate 34. Along with said lowering, an arm 23 is engaged with a stopper 35, and a second sensor 32 is turned OFf to stop lowering of the press plate 34. This causes the impeller 20 under rotation to be prevented from making contact with the accumulated bank notes, resulting in prevention of the occurrence of charging due to generation of statistic electricity and prevention of drawing in of the paper sheets by means of the impeller, and improvement of accumulating performance.
