PURPOSE:To eliminate the burden of an operator and to shorten a forming operation time by designating the number of characters in the longitudinal direction and the number of characters in the lateral direction in an external character mode, displaying an external character forming area corresponding to it, and forming plural external characters integrally. CONSTITUTION:When inserting a trademark in an inputting document, a cursor moved to a head position in which the trademark is to be written, and an external character forming mode key 1a is pressed. A processing section 8 stores it in an address register 8a corresponding to the cursor position of a document memory 5, displays an external character forming menu on a CR display 2. Then, the integrally forming mode 2 is selected, an executing key 1b is pressed. When a start external character code and the numbers of characters in the longitudinal direction and characters in the lateral direction of the trademark are designated, an external character forming area 9 is displayed and the designated data is respectively stored in registers 8b-8d. When inputting a dot data constituting the trademark, it is written in a VRAM 4, and the trademark is formed in the external character forming area 9. Then, when pressing down the executing key 1b, the trademark is displayed on a display area 10 on the image plane of the CRT 2.
