PURPOSE:To obtain a stable low-cost original reader which is easily adjusted without requiring much precision for parts by fitting an automatic original feeder to a lower unit and allowing upper and lower units to be opened and closed. CONSTITUTION:An optical readout part B (fluorescent lamp 14, mirrors 15, 16, and 17, and CCD (not shown in figure)), an upper conveyance part B (upper front conveyor roller 6a, upper rear conveyor roller 7a, and rear conveyor guide 8), and an inverting and discharging part C (rear original guide 9, inverting tray 10, discharge rollers 11 and 12, and discharge tray) are provided to the upper unit R in one body. Further, an automatic original feed part D (feed assistant roller 3, conveyor belt 4, and separation belt 5), a lower conveyance part E (lower front conveyor roller 6b) and lower conveyor roller 7b), and an electric accessory part F (printed board 18, fluorescent lamp inverter 35, and coil 18a) are provided to the lower unit in one body. Then, both units R and U are divided by an original conveyance path except the automatic original feed part D and opened from an operation-side front surface toward the inner side in the moving direction of an original.
