PURPOSE:To reduce power consumption without lowering luminance by energizing two independent luminous areas of an electroluminescent device periodically at specified time interval. CONSTITUTION:A luminous section 31 regulated by a transparent electrode 11 and an electrode 21 and a luminous section regulated by electrodes 11, 22 are formed independently separating back electrodes 21, 22. Driving pulse voltage VX is applied to the electrode 11 from a circuit of transistors Tr41, 42 of a driving circuit 40, and driving pulse voltage VY1 is applied to the electrode 21 from a circuit of Tr45, 46, and driving pulse voltage VY2 is applied to the electrode 22 from a circuit of Tr43, 44. The driving frequency of voltage VX is made to 1kHz, and that of voltage VY1, VY2 is made to 500Hz, a half of the frequency of VX, and phase of voltage VY1, VY2 is shifted by 180 respectively. Thereby, power consumption can be lowered without lowering luminance.
