PURPOSE:To obtain a thin metallic film type magnetic recording medium which hardly curls by continuously forming a thin magnetic metallic film directly or via an underlying layer on a high-polymer substrate which curls during traveling. CONSTITUTION:The medium which hardly curls is obd. by using a polyimide film which curls outward on the side to be provided with a magnetic surface, heating the peripheral face of a cylindrical can to 240 deg.C and depositing a vertically magnetically anisotropic Co-Cr film 9 having 300-1,000Oe coercive force HCL in the perpendicular direction by evaporation on said film. The magnetic characteristics are improved when an underlying layer consisting of Ti, Ge, etc., is deposited by evaporation on the high-polymer film to about 100-500Angstrom thickness and the film thickness with said extent hardly affects curling. A reversely curled film is used if the non-curling high-polymer film curls reverse when deposited by evaporation with the magnetic layer. The use of a polyamide or polyethylene terephthalate film or thin film consisting of materials besides Co-Cr for the substrate is equally effective.
