PURPOSE:To attain the picture with high quality by discriminating an edge region and a non-edge region automatically and applying a halftone processing suitable for respective regions. CONSTITUTION:Whether or not edge information is included in an input data is discriminated and the content of gradation processing is switched automatically depending on the result. The 1st gradation processing means 156 applies edge emphasis processing to an input data in the unit of picture elements, binary-codes the result by the dither method, and the 2nd gradation processing means 153 binary-codes the data by a processing having a comparatively small gradation error such as the sub matrix method. In case the edge information is included in the input data, the 1st gradation processing means 156 is selected and in case no edge information is included, the 2nd gradation processing means 153 is selected.
