PURPOSE:To enable a rotating speed of an ink ribbon take-up motor to increase when a take-up reel diameter is small and to decrease when said diameter is large so as to lower the power demand of the ink ribbon take-up motor, by a method wherein the running speed of an ink ribbon is detected and controlled to be constant. CONSTITUTION:When a take-up roller 2 rotates at a speed proportional to the printing speed of a printer, an ink ribbon 1 is paid out and fed through the top surface of a printing head 3 followed by the movement of a tension bar 4 in a direction of Arrow (a). This movement is detected by a sensor 5, and as a result, a detection signal 6 is output via gate circuits 7 to a microprocessor 8 for controlling an ink ribbon take-up operation which serves as a take-up speed controlling portion. Then, by detecting the signal, the microprocessor 8 rotates an ink ribbon take-up motor 10 with use of an ink ribbon take-up motor drive portion 9 to take up the paid out ink ribbon.
