3-ethylbenzophenone is prepared from the heavy oil fraction obtained as a by-product in the alkylation of benzene with ethylene in the presence of synthetic zeolite ZSM-5 catalyst. The alkylation product contains benzene, ethylbenezene and polyethylbenzenes, which are distilled off and the high-boiling residue distilled at 288-295 deg. C to give a fraction containing mainly (3-ethylphenyl)phenylmethane. This is oxidised in such a way as not to break carbon-carbon bonds. The product is 3-ethylbenzophenone. The oxidation may be by molecular oxygen (at least one mole) in the presence of a metal catalyst contg. a Group VIB, VIIB or VIII metal (pref. Fe, Co, Mn or Cr) at 30-250 deg. C. Alternatively oxidation may be by manganese dioxide, permanganate, chromic acid, dichromate, periodate, ruthenium tetroxide, chlorite, hypochlorite or ozone, at 0-200 deg. C.
|
