In a digital telephone system when plural signals, received simultaneously over speed lines, are processed and sent out over a raido channel, the signals are smapled and digitised before the samples are compressed in a compressor. Channel controllers coupled to the compressor combine the compressed digital samples to a sequential bit stream with a repetitive slot per compressor channel. A remote central unit responds to a connection request signal to deliver a slot signal to show when the sampler-converter is coupled to the speech line. It associates the slot of the relevent line by use of stored association data which is interrogated to make the required connection. A call unit coupled to the central enables the sampler-converter indicated by the central unit.
