摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To improve combustion at low load time without increasing an output loss by delaying the closing timing of both intake and exhaust valves with an overlap thereof left as held constant, when a load of an internal combustion engine is a predetermined value or less. CONSTITUTION:An engine 1 is provided with fuel injection valves 5 for injecting fuel directly into cylinders. Fuel in a fuel tank 9 is supplied through a high pressure reservoir tank 6 by low and high pressure fuel pumps 10, 7. An ECU (electronic control unit) 20 controls the fuel injection valves 5 and spark plugs 16 based on each detection signal from a crank angle sensor 22 and an accelerator opening sensor 24. Here in a cam shaft for driving intake and exhaust valves, a variable valve timing device 30 is additionally provided. In the ECU20, when a load of the engine 1 is a predetermined value or less, an overlap of the intake and exhaust valves is left as held constant, to delay the closing timing of both the intake and exhaust valves.</p>
