A car headlamp uses a gas discharge bulb as a light source with a reflector behind it and a protective arrangement in-front of it to prevent the bulb's illumination should the headlamp lens be damaged in an accident. This protective device is arranged so that, if the intermittent stress on it exceeds a certain value, it overbalances and strikes the bulb so as to render it inoperative. The shape of the device is that of a C surrounding the bulb with the upper end free and the lower end pivoted on a mounting below the bulb. Alternatively, the pivoted end is attached to the reflector. ADVANTAGE - Protects people from possible UV radiation and high voltage when discharge bulb is exposed with broken headlamp lens.
